A notice is sent to the P. Shaw Sprague family in August each year asking for grant requests. Only grants requests submitted by sponsoring family members are considered for donation. Active financial or volunteer support of the organization by the sponsoring family member is an important criteria in the Trustees’ decision making. The Foundation is not a substitute for individual family member giving. The application deadline is October 15. The most current application form is found here. Grants are issued before the year end.
In 2011 the Foundation received grant requests totaling $234,850. A total of 53 grants were awarded at an average amount of $2,750. There were 8 grants to educational organizations, 11 to cultural and arts groups, 26 to social service organizations and 9 to environmental groups.
